Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me." |
Why I choose this topic?
When I was first given this assignment I initially thought I would choose my naïve country Nigeria, being that I know so much about the country already. However, as I began my research process on Nigerian news the reoccurring current event I found was centered around Boko Haram, an Islamic Terrorist Group in Nigeria that is persecuting Muslims in Northern Nigeria. Now that interest caused me to drift the focus of my research off Nigeria, but onto Muslim oppression everywhere on the globe. Then, while still heavily researching Muslim oppression the topic of the ban of religious veils in France appeared in my research-and from there I knew my topic.
I was beyond taken aback to know something like that was happening in the world, even though I as an individual wasn't directly affected it still greatly concerned me. I began researching the ban and its effectiveness so far, and questioned how something so cruel could be a policy in France. With weeks of research, I discovered the ban was fueled by previous terrorist attacks France has endured, and because of the fear of Islamic terror they decided to ban Muslim religious veils as a whole.
During my research process it was very hard for me to hear about how the French government has oppressed these Muslim women simply based on the actions of extremist. At times, I would have to stop researching because the information was too cruel and inhumane. Knowing the topic I was researching wasn't something in the history books, but a current event being fought as we speak alarmed me.
As of now, the only new development on the topic is the involvement of the United Nation. They have declared the ban unmoral and are working to get the ban overturn. I truly hope in the next few years the ban can be overturned and France as a country can work to become accepting of Muslims and stop treating Muslims like foreigners in "their" country.
